Plant Types
Grass typesNormal grass spreads over Dirt Blocks. Above ground grass blocks will grow Mushroom, Daybloom, flowers, and weeds, all of which can be cut with any tool or weapon. If a grass block has room below it, vines will grow downward from it. Grass is necessary in order to planttrees. Grass does not spread below level elevations, but can be placed in lower layers block by block using the Staff of Regrowth or Grass Seeds. This grass will not grow flowers and tall grass, and trees planted on it will never mature. Grass occurs naturally above ground, but it may also be planted by using grass seeds bought from the Dryad.
Corrupted grass spreads over Dirt Blocks and normal grass. Above ground corrupt grass blocks will grow Vile Mushrooms, Deathweed, corrupted flowers, and weeds, all of which can be cut with any tool or weapon. In addition, corrupted thorns will grow from corrupted grass in any condition. Vines do not grow from corrupted grass. Like normal grass, it does not spread below level elevations. This type of grass occurs naturally in corrupted areas and may also be planted with Corrupt Seeds dropped by the Eye of Cthulhu. A large enough amount of corrupted grass will turn the area into a Corruption biome. In hardmode, corrupted grass will convert blocks that are up to three squares away into their corrupted variants. This includes turning jungle grass and normal grass below level elevations into corrupted grass. It also gives off particles.
Mushroom grass spreads over Mud Blocks and will grow Glowing Mushrooms and giant glowing mushrooms and can be found underground at a depth of 0 feet or below. Patches of mud seeded with mushroom grass can be found in some caverns underground, generally with several tall giant glowing mushrooms. Mushroom Grass Seeds are an uncommon drop from glowing mushrooms and giant glowing mushrooms. Mushroom grass glows faintly and can be used as a natural light source. Mushroom grass blocks are unaffected by corruption. When above ground, Mushroom Grass appears to actually grow faster. (More testing needed.)
Jungle grass spreads over Mud Blocks at any depth, and will grow vines, jungle thorns, Moonglow, Jungle Spores, Jungle Roses, andNature's Gift. Jungle grass occurs naturally in the Jungle and Underground Jungle area but can also be planted from Jungle Grass Seedswhich are a rare drop from jungle grass weeds and glowing flowers. From version 1.0.4 jungle plants grow underwater in contrast to other plants.
Crimson grass spreads over Dirt Blocks and normal grass. It acts similar to corrupt grass, but instead of growing thorny bushes, red, flesh-like vines will grow from the bottom of crimson grass and also spread the crimson. It can be grown with Crimson Seeds, and can be spread with the Clentaminator or crimson blocks.
Hallowed grass spreads over Dirt Blocks and normal grass. Above ground hallowed grass blocks will grow Mushroom, Daybloom, and flowers, similar to normal grass. Like corrupt grass, hallowed grass does not spread below 0 feet elevation. Hallowed grass does not occur naturally until a world enters hardmode, and may be created with Hallowed Seeds sold by the Dryad in hardmode or with Holy Water. A large enough amount of hallowed grass will turn the area into a Hallow biome. At hardmode hallowed grass will convert blocks that are up to three squares away into their hallowed variants, although it does not turn jungle grass into hallowed grass. It gives off a sparkle particle effect.

It comes in five colors, and one color can be found throughout each third of a given map (three colors per world), either randomly on cave surfaces or in "moss chambers" with a matching mossy stone wall. Moss sprouts fuzz that can be cut like grass weeds, and mossy stone requires one more hit to break than clean stone, but otherwise moss does nothing. Moss will be destroyed if the stone block it is on becomes ebonstone, crimstone, or pearlstone.

Each herb will bloom when certain requirements are met. Herbs harvested while blooming will drop 1-3seeds of its kind. Herbs can also be grown inside Clay Pots using the seeds acquired after harvesting. There are currently 6 herbs in the game.

In either case, there must be empty space below for the vine to grow (a Torch or a Wood Platform, for example, will block them). Vines can be cut easily with nearly any Weapon or Tool, as the whole vine will instantly be destroyed if the top piece of the vine or the block that the vine is hanging from are destroyed. If that cannot be done, a vine can be destroyed by getting hit by a pickaxe or having the block they are hanging from be latched to by a grappling hook. Vines block light, but do not impede movement.
Contrary to tall grass, vines do not require sunlight and will grow behind walls and underground.
Vines will never drop the Vine object; this is an uncommon Man Eater drop.
Note: Hallow vines will spread hallow, and crimson vines will spread the crimson.
Cacti
Cactus seen in a Desert
Main article: CactusCacti can be found in the Desert biome on sand. They can be chopped down, like trees, to receiveCactus. However, unlike trees, you can mine the sand from beneath them, which will destroy the cactus.
A thorny bush in the Corruption
A thorny bush in the Underground Jungle
Thorny bushes are plants that grow naturally in the Corruption and the Underground Jungle, like grass. Unlike grass though, Thorny Bushes will damage the player on contact. Currently, there are two types of thorny bushes: red bushes that grow in the Underground Jungle which deal 25 damage and purple bushes that grow in the Corruption that deal 10 damage. Thorny Bushes grow in all directions (not just upwards), and may spread. All NPCs and enemies are immune to them. They cannot be obtained as an item. The Corruption variant of Thorny Bushes spreads corruption, the Jungle variant, however, does not spread jungle grass. Thorny bushes cannot grow over or otherwise affect vines. Therefore, vines can prevent the propagation of Corruption across large gaps that would otherwise require careful maintenance. However corrupt bushes will convert jungle bushes in hardmode.
Life FruitMain Article: Life FruitLife Fruit are found only in the Jungle Biome. They can be collected by swinging a sword or pickaxe to destroy it like grass or thorns. Life Fruit are consumed for a permanent increase of 5 to a players maximum Health.
Dye Plants
Dye plants produce or transform into dye materials when harvested. They grow in various regions depending on the type of plant; see dyefor more information where to harvest each one.
